With Sandy coming our way, the metro and federal offices already closed, you have hopefully already started to prepare yourselves for a few days without power. With that in mind, make sure your devices are charged and ready to go so you can still keep track of the latest information. Even if you don’t have Internet access at home, you can still use your laptops as a charging device for your phones as well (most likely at least).

Power Out?
If you have to evacuate, put a bowl of ice cubes in the freezer. When you return, you’ll see one of three things:
- The ice cubes are still ice cubes. The power never went out long enough to spoil your food, so everything in the fridge is still fine.
- The ice cubes are now water. Throw out everything in both your freezer and fridge that might have spoiled (you can keep the mustard).
- The ice cubes are ice, but aren’t cubes anymore, just 1 flat bowl-full of ice. This means they melted then re-froze when the power came back on. Again, throw out everything that might have spoiled.
- You can also drink the melted ice once it’s lost its ability to keep things cool
- Have beer and wine on hand, you will need it.
