On March 31st, undergraduates from American University’s Social Media Club celebrated their second annual Social Learning Summit (#sls12) with two days of insightful panels featuring thought leaders from an impressive variety of backgrounds, several of whom also happened to be SMCDC chapter leaders!
Delivering Friday evening’s keynote address was Alex Priest, who as one of the founders of AU’s Social Media Club, explained how his passion for all things social has lead to continued professional success both as Uber’s local Community Manager and Vice-President of Digital Operations for SMC-DC. I am told that somewhere hidden in his presentation is a link for a lifetime of reliance on Uber. Thankfully Uber is also hiring, so if your idea of a good time is doing battle overzealous taxi-cab commissioners and their entrenched lobbyists, you can apply here.
On Saturday, current SMC-DC President Rachael King and SMC-DC Finance Team member Bennett Resnik shared their expertise on Personal Branding (#digime)on an all-star panel featuring Ben Balter, Bennet Richardson, Jennifer Murphy and Nidhai Charfi. In a discussion that was extremely well moderated by long time SMCDC supporter Tod Plotkin (Principal and Founder- Green Buzz Agency), Rachael and Bennett discussed some of their own best practices including:
- “ABC: Always Be Coffee-ing”
- How to use Pintrest as an interactive resume board
- How even non-bros can use tools to track results in social media.
- How to get the most out of your inbox with Chrome Extensions for Gmail like Rapportive.
- Why your LinkedIn resume shouldn’t read like the paper version.
- How to move from online discussion to professionally rewarding offline exchanges.
- Why it is important to “Dig your well before you’re thirsty,” or in other words, how to improve your network before need it.
Incidentally, Saturday’s closing keynote was also given by a SMCDC Alumni and current President & Founder of iStrategy Labs, Peter Corbett. If your noticing a pattern here, perhaps you come to our next event on April 18th and see how you can get more involved with SMCDC!
