Jeffrey Grossman named head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering

Jeffrey Grossman, the Morton and Claire Goulder and Family Professor in ecological Systems plus MacVicar Faculty other, is appointed the brand new head associated with the division of components Science and Engineering effective Jan. 1, 2020.

Grossman obtained his PhD in theoretical physics from University of Illinois and performed postdoctoral work on the University of Ca at Berkeley. He was a Lawrence Fellow on Lawrence Livermore nationwide Laboratory and returned to Berkeley as director of the Nanoscience Center and mind associated with Computational Nanoscience analysis team, by having a consider power programs. In fall 2009, he joined up with MIT, in which he has got create a analysis system known for its efforts to power transformation, power storage, membranes, and clean-water technologies.

Grossman’s passion for teaching and outstanding contributions to training are obvious through courses including 3.091 (Introduction to Solid-State Chemistry) — within which Grossman applies MIT’s “mens-et-manus” (mind-and-hand) mastering philosophy. He utilizes “goodie bags” containing resources and materials he addresses inside the lectures, motivating hands-on discovering and challenging students to inquire of big concerns, simply take opportunities, and collaborate collectively.

In recognition of their contributions to manufacturing education, Grossman had been called an MIT MacVicar Faculty Fellow and received the Bose Award for quality in Teaching, and also being named a fellow of the United states Physical Society. He has got published above 200 medical papers, keeps 17 existing or pending U.S. patents, and recently co-founded a company, through Separations, to commercialize graphene-oxide membranes.

“Professor Grossman has done remarkable work in materials science and engineering, particularly power transformation, energy storage, and clean-water technologies,” says Anantha Chandrakasan, dean of the MIT class of Engineering and Vannevar Bush Professor of electric Engineering and Computer Science. “He has shown exemplary dedication and sight being an educator. I’m thrilled which he is supposed to be serving since the new head of your materials technology and manufacturing department, and understand he’ll be considered a great frontrunner.”
