Career Fair Coming April 24
If there is one thing that DC has an abundance of, it’s jobs. For that reason, SMCDC has partnered with the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs (@SMPAGWU) to offer a career fair later this month.
Unlike most job fairs where you bring a stack of resumes and hope for the best, we’re focusing specifically on communications, marketing, social media, and related careers, with a bit of a twist! Students can attend for free and non-students can with a nominal fee, but we are seeking sponsors and partners as well. More details and registration here (don’t miss the early bird pricing!).
If you are hiring or would like to use your experience to give back to the community, we would love for you to join our career fair as a speaker or partner. Please fill out this form so that we may contact you promptly.
“SMCDC works to bring the movers and shakers of the DC social community within reach,” said Social Media Club DC President Alex Stevens. “We provide a unique opportunity to meet and work with local twitter celebs in person. In a time where the job market is less than awesome, we want to bring our members something more than just a networking event with recruiters.”
The idea behind the event is to help our attendees build better resumes, learn how to handle themselves with ease at an interview, and have all the answers to the toughest interview questions. Not to mention how to prepare for the dreaded “what questions do you have for me?,” question.
This event is designed to help clarify and simplify the job search nightmare and provide tips for success – from narrowing the first job search to closing the deal and negotiating a contract, the process will be covered,” said Social Media Club DC Events Director Kelly Paras. “Plus, there will be a handful of recruiters in attendance who are actually looking to hire, today!”
In January 2013, we launched a pilot mentor program with 13 graduating seniors of the School of Media and Public Affairs. The Leadership committee has worked closely with the mentees to help prepare them for graduation and beyond. “We relied on the feedback and the needs of the students to help plan the topics for the Career Fair event,” said Stevens.
Our event isn’t just for graduating seniors, we’re also expecting to see a large turn out of professional level employees. The career fair will be a great resource for companies to recruit people who are in tune with the DC Social Media community who are looking to take the next step in their career,” said Stevens.
The event space will comfortably house 350 of you and your friends. And like all SMCDC events, there will be alcohol available (cash bar) to help grease your social wheels.
